In your child's homework packet today, you may have noticed a Home Link from our Focus on First curriculum. This is an optional part of the homework package; feel free to do as many of the activities with your child as you are able. These activities help reinforce the themes and content of our work during Reader's Workshop. Enjoy!

What we are learning this week...
First grade students continue to work hard on practicing classroom routines and expectations.
In Reader's Workshop, we are continuing to learn about communities. This week our work revolved around the central question of "What roles and responsibilities do we have in our communities?" The texts we read included Quinito's Neighborhood and A Castle on Viola Street. Be sure to ask your child about some of our vocabulary words for the week: individual, role, common good, public space, law and characteristics.
In addition, students also worked on identifying the setting in a story, how to read short-vowel word with regular spelling patterns, and on thinking and writing about their own identities.
Looking ahead to next week...our central question will be "How do people become leaders?"
In Writer's Workshop, students have continued to work on books on topics of their choosing. We have begun reading texts about real-life experiences (such as Jabari Jumps and Rollercoaster) and students will begin to work on their own personal narratives next week.
In Math, students have been working on addition story problems. We have worked especially on developing efficient strategies for solving addition story problems and recording those strategies. We will move on to subtraction next week!
In Open Circle, we have been learning about non-verbal signals, and how they can be both useful and important in our classroom community. Look for more information about this early next week.
Stay tuned for more updates!!

What we are learning this week....
In Reader's Workshop, we are using the Focus on First curriculum. We have started our first unit and our work centers around the question "How do we build strong communities?" We have read different kinds of texts -- books, songs, poems -- to help us think about ourselves and our community.
We have also been learning about nouns, and identifying them in texts.
In Writer's Workshop, students have started writing books! We are learning about the routines and materials we will use this year as first grade writers.
In Math, students are working on math games and activities that reinforce counting skills. Ask your child about some of the games we have played -- Roll and Record, and Build It. Students are practicing these skills in order to get ready to work on addition story problems next week.
We have also done a lot of work around our Curley Cares expectations -- how we care about ourselves, each other and our school. We are building a strong community in our classrooms!
We have had a busy 6 days!! Check the blog for more information about what's happening in Grade 1.
